The National Honor Society is a nationwide organization that recognizes exceptional high school students. At H-B Woodlawn, the NHS is more than just a collection of students who have reached a high grade point average. Before being inducted into the Society, the students must demonstrate the values of leadership as well as service. Students are nominated for the NHS during their sophomore year, depending on their grade point average. After the nomination students submit essays describing themselves and the academic characteristics they possess. Along with this essay, the students also submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher.
This year, our NHS is taking steps toward helping the local community by organizing stream clean ups, park clean ups, and helping with the holiday gift drive. Additionally, the NHS has begun to aid the international community by organizing the “Shoe Drive” which is a collection of donated shoes of moderately good quality that will be sent out to those in need in the nation of Honduras. Aside from providing our students of high potential with an extra curricular activity to participate in, the NHS motivates the members to continue to strive toward academic success.
