Exterior rendering of the new school on Wilson Blvd

Parking

  • I am coming to drop off my student’s lunch and need to park for 10 minutes. Where do I park?
    • Parking spots on both Quinn Street and Wilson Boulevard, directly in front of the school, will be reserved for APS’ use and designated for short term parking.
  • I am dropping my student off after a dentist appointment, mid-morning. Where should I drop them off?
    • Parking spots on both Quinn Street and Wilson Boulevard, directly in front of the school, will be reserved for APS’ use and designated for short term parking.
  • I am coming to the building for a meeting with a teacher. I will be there for about an hour to an hour and a half. Where do I park?
    • Park in the garage located at 1530 Wilson Boulevard. Take a ticket from the machine at the entrance and bring it with you into the building. Enter the school at the East entrance, which is where the main office is located. Office staff will be able to direct you on parking validation procedures. Your parking will not cost you money.
  • I am coming to the building as an official visitor, substitute teacher, or volunteer. I will be there for about an hour to an hour and a half. Where do I park?
    • Park in the garage located at 1530 Wilson Boulevard. Take a ticket from the machine at the entrance and bring it with you into the building. Enter the school at the East entrance, which is where H-B’s main office is located. Office staff will be able to direct you on parking validation procedures. Your parking will not cost you money.
  • Is the new building accessible by public transportation?
    • Why, yes! We are less than a half-mile from both the Rosslyn and Court House Metro stations, and there are multiple ART and Metro bus stops within one block of The Heights building. There are also Capital Bike Share docks nearby and bike racks outside the building.

Busing

  • What is a hub stop?
    • APS Transportation is using our program as a pilot this year to reduce the number of buses they use and the number of time kids spend on buses. Though the “hub stop” to which your family is assigned may be farther from your residence than previous stops, the bus will stop fewer times and your students commute will hopefully be shorter.
  • When will my hub stop be announced?
    • Mid-August
  • If I feel my hub stop is too far, who do I contact?
    • Transportation Call Center – 703-228-6640 or 703-228-8670
  • When do the late (after-school activities) buses start running?
    • September 9
  • My student is playing a fall sport at a comprehensive high school. When do the sports buses begin to run? Where do they pick students up? What time do they come?
    • The sports buses will begin running on the first day of school. They will pick up on 18th street, the same place as the regular buses drop off and pick up. They will leave H-B Woodlawn at 3:15 pm.
  • My student says they’ll take the metro. Is APS going to help pay for their fare?
    • APS staff is speaking with Metro, Arlington Transportation Partners, and other transportation organizations to understand the viability and logistics of this option. SchoolTalk messages will be coming about various pilot programs in the coming weeks.

Security and Privileges

  • Are off-campus privileges the same?
    • Off-campus privileges will remain the same. 8th graders and high school students (whose parents have given permission) will be able to leave campus during breaks in their schedule. 6th graders and 7th graders will be able to leave campus during designated times with a teacher chaperone. There is a 7-11 adjacent to our building. 6th and 7th graders may choose to visit the 7-11. They can not cross any streets or go east of our building on Wilson Blvd.
  • Which door is the main office located near?
    • The H-B Woodlawn main office is located directly inside the east entrance closest to the pathway on the east side of the building on the first floor. The Shriver Program main office is located directly inside the northwest entrance on the ground floor, closest to the temporary fire station.
  • Are the doors locked?
    • Yes, all external doors will be locked from the outside. Students and visitors will be able to buzz in at the East Entrance, closest to the H-B Woodlawn main office.
  • Will there be an orientation for students before school starts?
    • Because our staff will not be in the building until the week before students return, we will be unable to provide tours before school starts. During the first weeks of school, we will have ample opportunities for students, staff, and families to get to know the building.
  • Will there be tours available to families?
    • Families are invited to Back to School Night on September 12. This will be a great opportunity to explore the building. Back to School Night will have a different format this year than previous years to allow families this opportunity.
